Last Friday I realized that if I was going to wear a hat that I better start looking since Derby was literally a week away. I decided to take the arts and crafts route and make my own hat. I looked online for Derby Hats and found some great designs.

I went to the store with these hats in mind. I also tried on my dress and shoes prior to going so that I would know what I wanted to match. I was tempted to just buy a pre-maid hat that would match until I saw the price tags. Instead, I found a plain black hat that was the style that I wanted. I tried different flower arrangements with ribbons and feathers before picking out the final accersories. My total came to $36.00, compared to the $268.00 total for the lady that checked out in front of me.

Making the hat was stress free. I had a sewing kit, scissors, wire cutters, and tacky glue. The ribbon was a bit trying at first. I used pins to hold it in place, then went around different sides of the hat stitching it in place with matching thread. There was excess ribbon after wrapping the ribbon around the hat, I folded and bunched the excess and sewed it in place on the side. This was the main side that I would be decorating. I attached white feather bunches, 2 feathers that stick out of the bunches, and miniature stargazer lilies (which I know are the official flowers of the Oaks and I am going to Derby) but they matched.

It took me about an hour to put the hat together. I let it dry over night and it looks fabulous! I can not wait to wear it to The Kentucky Derby.

Kentucky Derby "Hats Gone Wild"

There has been a recent release of the new 2009 Kentucky Derby Art collection, “Hats Gone Wild”. This is a hand bag and purse line that includes a coin purse, cosmetic case, wallet, tote, and a hobo bag.

This line can be purchased at local retailers including, A Taste of Kentucky.

The collection is a twist from the 2009 official art of the Derby.

I was reading the Scene from Saturday’s Courier-Journal and I found a very interesting article that I would like to share. Dee’s craft store is hosting a class to assist with the design of your Derby Hat. They are going to have staff on hand with tips and suggestions. The cost is $20.00. With the economy the way it is, there is no better way to save more money for betting then making your own Derby hat. The class will be hosted Wednesday March 11, 2009 from 6pm-8pm at their Shelbyville Road location. Enjoy!

The Party Returns

Every year, one of the most famous parties is hosted in Louisville, Kentucky. It is none other then the famous Barnstable Brown Party. Louisvillians line the street every Friday evening before Derby trying to catch a glimpse of a hotshot celebrity. This party brings famous celebrities to Louisville to party it up. Kid Rock, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, Hugh Hefner, Nick Lachey are some of the famous celebrities that have graced Louisville with their presence. Derby is such an exciting time for Louisville. Derby puts Louisville on the map for sports and parties. What better to be known for? The guest list has not been released for this year, but if you have heard of any rumors of celebrities attending the greatest Kentucky Derby Party…let us in on the secret!

Make your own hat! Your outfit is not complete without a Derby hat. However, keeping up with the fashion can be expensive so, look amazing with out spending a great deal. Find a plain weave style, big brim hat at your local department store. Check out different styles and looks online. Check out your local hobby and craft store (make sure you search online for coupons before you head out) and grab all the materials you need to make your one of a kind hat, ribbon, beads, scissors, pins, material glue. Once you have collected all your needed items…create your million dollar masterpiece!
